ORLEN Unipetrol includes sustainable fuel HVO100 in its wholesale offer

28-01-2025

The largest domestic refining and petrochemical group, ORLEN Unipetrol, has expanded its wholesale offer to include low-carbon fuel, HVO100. It also modified its distribution terminal at Paramo Pardubice accordingly. HVO100 (hydrotreated vegetable oil) is a synthetic product made from renewable materials, mainly used cooking oil. HVO100 is compatible with most modern diesel engines. It can be pre-blended with diesel oil, representing the easiest way to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 90% compared to standard diesel oil.

“The fuel sector must report 6% annual savings of CO2 emissions, and this value will more than double in the coming five years. At the same time, it is an obligation to add advanced biofuels to fuels in the amount of 1.07% of the energy content. This share will grow up to five times in 2030,” said Jiří Winkelhöfer, Wholesale Director at the ORLEN Unipetrol Group, adding: “HVO100 has become one of the major tools to meet these goals in recent years. It is mostly added to diesel oil. But now, we are launching it as a separate product, thus reacting to the high demand for sustainable fuels. Compared to other sustainable fuels and drives, HVO100 has a clear advantage because the current refuelling infrastructure can be used for its sale and distribution, and it can be used in standard diesel engines.”

HVO100 excels with its combusting and low-temperature properties. Its cetane number of more than 70 units provides higher performance, smoother engine operation, and better starts. Its filterability of up to −40 °C enables seamless vehicle operation in winter: high chemical purity and absence of aromatic hydrocarbons and sulphur result in cleaner combustion. In addition, it reduces the risk of motor oil dilution and has longer storage times. HVO100 is compatible with most modern diesel engines (with the abbreviation “XTL” on the tank lid) and can be pre-blended with diesel oil. In practice, it is the easiest way to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 90% compared to standard diesel.
